Twine Architectural Studio completed the Northwell Health LIJMC Vault 3 LINAC Interior Renovation, a key component of a larger radiation oncology modernization project that expanded the hospital’s cancer treatment capabilities while maximizing the use of existing infrastructure.

The overall initiative included the relocation of an existing TrueBeam LINAC to another treatment vault, the construction of a new High-Dose Radiation (HDR) room, the creation of a new physician on-call suite, and the complete transformation of Vault 3 into a state-of-the-art linear accelerator treatment room. Rather than constructing a new vault, the project team successfully repurposed a dormant treatment vault that had previously been converted into an office and on-call suite, requiring extensive coordination among the owner, design team, engineers, equipment vendors, and contractors while allowing the department to remain fully operational throughout construction.

Although LINAC environments carry significant technical and regulatory requirements, the design prioritized the patient experience, with the goal of creating a space that feels calmer, more supportive, and less clinical. Clinicians were closely involved in selecting the artwork at the end of the entry corridor, providing a visual focal point that softens the transition into the treatment space and offers patients a moment to pause before therapy begins. Inside the vault, warm lighting and a softly illuminated skylight mural contribute to a more restorative atmosphere, helping to reduce anxiety and create a greater sense of comfort during treatment.
